SIGN UP FOR aN ONLINE ROUNDTABLE SERIES: BUILD IN WOOD - A Nordic-US Dialogue
The construction
industry is a large contributor to CO2 emissions, but advancing a circular and
wood-based construction industry could potentially lower this significantly.
The Nordics are
frontrunners when it comes to building in wood and imagining a digital,
circular and wood-based future for the construction industry. The West coast of
the United States is also working with this agenda and they use wood as the
main material in many constructions. The area is now home to leading technologies
and a strong and growing business for a circular wood-based construction
industry.
Together with the other Nordic missions in Silicon Valley, Innovation Centre Denmark presents a
series of three roundtables, where Nordic and American experts meet to discuss
drivers for change, common challenges and future opportunities for
cross-Atlantic co-operation.
The roundtable discussions will result in recommendations
for future actions and increased cooperation. Each roundtable will
focus on a different theme related to building in wood.
In the first roundtable, experts will
discuss wood as a material and its pros and cons.
The second roundtable will
focus on the challenges in ongoing efforts to create a circular construction
industry and how the use of wood can support this goal.
In the third
roundtable, experts will discuss how tech can advance a wood-based construction
industry.
The panel for the roundtables of experts from West coast of the United States and the Nordics will be moderated by the Swedish journalist, architecture reviewer and moderator, Mark Isitt.
Meet the panel of experts:
Anna Denell, Sustainability Director Vasakronan AB, expert from Sweden
Martin Tamke, Associate Professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, expert from Denmark & Germany
Pasi Aalto, Centre Director NTNU Wood, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Architecture and Technology Faculty of Architecture and Design, expert from Norway & Finland
Greg Howes, Partner at CutMyTimber, Founder at MassTimberCity, Co-founder at AEC Hackathons, expert from Washington, United States
Mark Cabrinha, Associate Dean For Academic Affairs, CAED at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, expert from California, United States
Michelle Kam-Biron, Mass Timber Specialist at Structurlam, expert from California, United States
overview of roundtables
Wood in Focus
The first webinar of the BUILD IN WOOD - A Nordic-US Dialogue webinar series organized by the Nordic missions in Silicon Valley will focus on WOOD as a material and address key questions such as:
- What challenges does building in wood present?
- How do we achieve a high level of sustainability?
- How can wood help create a circular economy in construction
Guest speakers:
The webinar will begin by short inspiring presentations by two guest speakers who will shed light on the challenges and advantages of using wood as a building material.
Mark Hughes, Professor at Aalto University in Finland, Wood Material Technology. Mark's work has focused on improving the sustainability of wood construction by using it to enhance the energy-efficiency of buildings as well as studying how circular economy principles might be applied to the wood value chain. His research interests also encompasses the role that biomaterials can play in mitigating climate change, when used in the built environment.
Panelists:
The panel of experts (see list above) will then discuss drivers for change, common challenges and future opportunities for cross-Atlantic co-operation. The panel will be moderated by the Swedish journalist, architecture reviewer and moderator, Mark Isitt.
The roundtable takes place on May 26 at 18:30 CET (Copenhagen).
CIRCULARITY IN FOCUS
The second webinar of the BUILD IN WOOD - A Nordic-US Dialogue webinar series organized by the Nordic missions in Silicon Valley will focus on CIRCULARITY in the construction industry.
The panel will shed light on the challenges in ongoing efforts to create a circular construction industry and how the use of wood can support this goal. They will address key questions such as:
- What challenges and advantages does building in wood present?
- What is the life cycle of wood?
- How can we strengthen a wood-based circular economy in construction?
The panel of experts (see list above) will then discuss drivers for change, common challenges and future opportunities for cross-Atlantic co-operation. The panel will be moderated by the Swedish journalist, architecture reviewer and moderator, Mark Isitt.
The roundtable takes place on June 9 at 18:30 CET (Copenhagen).
TECH IN FOCUS
The third webinar of the BUILD IN WOOD - A Nordic-US Dialogue webinar series organized by the Nordic missions in Silicon Valley will focus on TECHNOLOGY in the construction industry.
Two experts (TBA) will give short presentations on the role of technology and digital solutions in a wood-based construction industry by addressing key questions:
- What are the challenges for advancing a wood-based circular construction industry?
- Can these challenges be addressed by existing technological solutions?
- How can technology support and increased use of wood in the construction industry and what does the future hold?
The roundtable takes place on August 18 at 18:30 CET (Copenhagen).
