How to apply for a Danish passport

You can apply for a new Danish passport or a renewal of your existing passport at the Consulate General of Denmark in Silicon Valley. Current processing time is 6-8 weeks.

If you live outside Denmark and have changed your name, you have to make sure that the name change is reflected in the CPR register before you make an appointment. It also applies to passport holders that already have a passport in the new name.

Danish authorities require an official legalised document confirming the change of name from the country where you are residing, in order for you to update your information in the local civil register (Folkeregisteret). Before your passport appointment, you must therefore inform the Danish Civil Register (Folkeregisteret) in the area where you used to live (sidste bopælskommune) either online or fill-in the name-change form and send it by mail to the “bopælskommune” you lived in before leaving Denmark.

You will be able to apply for a passport if your name matches the name registered in the Civil Person Register (CPR).

Passport applications received by mail will not be accepted.

Passports can be picked up at the Consulate General of Denmark in Silicon Valley on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM - 03:00 PM (PT) without an appointment.

Please Note

Passport applications will only be accepted when all original documents, including any name-change documentation, are provided. Copies of original documents are not accepted, and missing documents cannot be submitted by email afterward. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

This includes:

  • Proof of immigration status in the U.S., original permanent residence card (green card), and valid visa/i-94. If you are also a U.S. citizen, please bring original U.S. birth certificate, original birth-abroad certificate, original U.S. passport & original naturalization certificate.
  • Original certificate of Danish nationality (if born outside of Denmark).

Passport Delivery Delays

Please note that Danish authorities are currently experiencing temporary production and distribution delays affecting the delivery of new Danish passports. As a result, passport processing and delivery times may be longer than usual.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide individual delivery estimates at this time. The situation affects both Danish municipalities and Danish missions abroad, including embassies and consulates.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.
