We spearhead Denmark’s pioneering TechPlomacy efforts in Silicon Valley, focusing on the geopolitical implications of emerging technologies and the growing role of the technology industry in foreign and security policy. Technology and the digital domain are increasingly shaping geopolitics, with significant implications for Denmark and countries around the world. We are a dynamic and fast-paced office operating across several time zones, and our mission is to help Denmark understand, engage with and navigate this rapidly evolving landscape.

About the role

The successful candidate will work at the intersection of technology, geopolitics, foreign policy and national security, with a particular focus on some of the most politically consequential developments in the global technology sector.

The portfolio will cover online platforms and hyperscalers, with a particular focus on online safety, artificial intelligence, data centers, digital sovereignty and Europe’s technological dependencies. These issues are receiving significant and rapidly evolving political attention in Denmark, Europe, the United States and globally.

The Tech Advisor will monitor and analyze these developments and translate them into actionable foreign-policy insights for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and other relevant Danish stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

• Producing timely and high-quality analysis, reporting and diplomatic cables on major technology-policy developments, translating complex technological and regulatory issues into politically relevant insights.
• Monitoring and analyzing online platforms, hyperscalers and AI, including developments related to online safety, AI-generated content, cloud infrastructure, data centers, digital sovereignty and technological dependencies.
• Following relevant U.S. and European technology policy and regulation, including major EU legislation such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA).
• Building and maintaining relationships with leading technology companies, policymakers, experts and other stakeholders in the technology ecosystem.
• Assessing the geopolitical, foreign-policy and national-security implications of developments across the technology sector.
• Supporting high-level engagement and visits, including meetings, events and delegations involving Danish ministers, senior officials and representatives of international organizations.

In short, we are looking for a curious, analytical and proactive colleague who can understand complex technological developments, identify their wider geopolitical significance, and communicate these insights clearly in a diplomatic and foreign-policy context.

Required qualifications

• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience, for example within technology policy, foreign policy, international relations, national security, government, the technology sector, research or a related field.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand complex political and regulatory developments.
• Demonstrated ability to translate technical or complex subject matter into clear analysis.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across government and industry.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Desired qualifications

• Knowledge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark or experience working in a diplomatic, governmental or international environment.
• Experience with policy analysis, government reporting, diplomatic reporting or similar analytical work.
• Knowledge of technology policy and familiarity with areas such as online platforms, critical digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence or technology regulation.
• Professional proficiency in Danish or another Scandinavian language.

Employment conditions

• You will be offered full-time employment for 2 years with the possibility of extension as mission-employed staff.
• You will be employed with a work week of (on average) 37 hours, but you are employed without an upper working hours’ limit.
• You will be entitled to 5 weeks (25 working days) of paid vacation days per year.
• The position is in-office at 299 California Avenue, Palo Alto, California, USA.
• As part of your salary, you will be covered by a workplace pension scheme.
• You will be offered reasonable health coverage, which includes your spouse/partner as well as children under the age of 26, if applicable.
